Op-Ed: It’s been an honor working for Jersey City students as a BOE trustee

First, I want to sincerely thank everyone who participated in this year’s election, specifically voting for the Jersey City Board of Education. Whether you voted for me or for someone else, you did your civic duty — and I truly respect that.

Democracy only works when people use their voices, and this year, the people certainly spoke loud and clear.

While I was confident in earning another term, the voters decided it was time for something different. I came in sixth — not quite the victory I expected, but hey, the people wanted a change, and now they’ve got a third of it.

Sometimes progress comes in fractions.

I could be disappointed, but I’m not! I’m not saddened, hurt or any of those feelings I guess I’m expected to have.

I have a full, rewarding life, a career that continues to grow, and a deep appreciation for what we’ve accomplished together as a board during my tenure. Holding a seat was never the goal — working for students was. And on that front, I have no regrets.

I wish the new and returning members of the Jersey City Board of Education all the best as they take on the challenges ahead.

My hope is that they continue to work collaboratively, as we’ve done before, and focus on moving the district forward. Working against the superintendent or each other might make dramatic headlines, but it doesn’t do a thing for the students.

Congratulations to Lorenzo Richardson, Afaf Muhammed, and Noemi Velasquez on their victories. I also want to recognize Sumit Salia, Brendan Doohan and Aimee Sharrock for having the courage to step up and run — that alone deserves respect.

There are no hard feelings here — just gratitude, peace and pride for what was done, coupled with a little curiosity to see what this “change” brings.

I remain committed to the success of Jersey City Public Schools and to supporting our educators, families, and students in every way I can — whether from inside the boardroom or beyond it.

Amazing…Yes! Don’t be afraid to stand in your spotlight. It’s yours! Own it!

Unapologetically, be great and let your light shine, no matter who doesn’t like it.
