DeOrio, 76, a retired North Bergen firefighter, told North Bergen Police Officer Melissa Velazquez that he was at the traffic light on 61st Street and was making a right turn onto Tonnelle Avenue when the light turned green around 11:42 a.m., the police report says.

As he pulled out from the lot, the motor bicyclist, 29, of Jersey City, “struck the front quarter panel/bumper of his vehicle and fell onto the street.” HudPost first reported that DeOrio was involved in a motor vehicle accident this afternoon.

DeOrio told law enforcement that he stopped to check on the other driver and put on his emergency lights afterwards, according to the report.

CCTV cameras did not capture the incident, but a witness provided a cell phone video to police that corroborated DeOrio’s account of what happened.

The motor bicyclist, who was not wearing a helmet at the time, had his vehicle towed for being unregistered (it is a 750-Watt bike) and received two motor vehicle summonses, authorities said.
