Baez disclosed the salary of the former deputy police chief, who served on the force for 29 years before retiring in January, following an inquiry from HCV.

The West New York Board of Commissioners appointed DeRojas as their new director of public safety at a special meeting on September 6th. At the time, a town spokesman did not return an email asking what DeRojas’ compensation would be.

The North Hudson municipality had been without a public safety director since January 2020, when Public Safety Director Mark Flores, a former police captain, stepped down after just five months on the job, as HCV first reported.

He was hired at a starting salary of $100,000.

Along with Deputy Chief Santiago Cabrera, DeRojas had been running the department since Flores’ departure. Cabrera had been in charge of administration, while DeRojas had been tasked with running operations.

DeRojas also receives an annual pension of $161,184.48 for his nearly three decades of service, according to public records.
