“We’ve been waiting for the right window to conduct comprehensive snow removal operations,” Mayor James Solomon said in a statement.
“Now that forecasts show minimal storm activity ahead, we’re deploying all available resources to clear our main corridors and improve conditions for residents and commuters.”
The move comes after snow removal operations were widely panned by residents, with Department of Public Works Director Greg Kierce attributing the difficult situation to the most snow in a decade and a rock salt shortage, as HCV first reported.
Removal operations scheduled for this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, are Communipaw Avenue between Route 1&9 and Pacific Avenue and Montgomery Street from West Side Avenue to Marin Boulevard.
Next, operations set for Sunday and Monday include Martin Luther King Drive and Monticello Avenue from McAdoo to Storms Avenues and Bergen Avenue from John F. Kennedy Boulevard and Van Nostrand Avenue.
On Monday and Tuesday, Department of Public Works crews will focus on Central Avenue from Paterson Plank Road to Route 139 and West Side Avenue from Broadway to Audubon Avenue.
Finally, Garfield Avenue from Merritt to Grand Streets and Newark Avenue to Paterson Plank Road will be cleared on Tuesday and Wednesday.
A clean up crew will spot check the city on Thursday, and if cars need to be moved, flyers will be distributed.
Additionally, residents who park on the affected streets must move their vehicles before operations begin. No-parking signs have been posted along removal routes. Vehicles that remain on these streets during snow removal operations may be towed.
Free storm parking is available at designated public parking lots throughout the city and a complete list of available lots can be found here. Residents are encouraged to park in their driveways when possible.
This snow removal effort represents a coordinated operation between the Department of Public Works, the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Jersey City Police Department, and contracted snow removal partners.
“Clearing these major routes is essential for traffic flow, emergency vehicle access, and overall public safety. We appreciate residents’ cooperation in moving their vehicles so our crews can complete this important work,” Solomon added.
