“Our newest @HobokenPD officers have hit the ground running. As part of their field training they helped crack down on illegal e-bike & other micro-mobility riders on Washington St. & in Church Square Park on Friday & Monday. Efforts will continue,” the Hoboken PD wrote on X.

“During this initiative:
-A total of 24 summonses were issued to non-registered delivery riders under the new @CityofHoboken
ordinance.
-11 motor vehicle summonses issued.
– 2 moped/motorcycles towed.
-About 50 warnings were issued to further educate the riders.”

The Hoboken City Council approved an e-bike delivery licensing ordinance, sponsored by 1st Ward Councilman Paul Presinzano and co-sponsored by 3rd Ward Councilman Mike Russo and 4th Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos, back in March, as HCV first reported.

The ordinance mandates that deliveristas register with the city for $5 a year and receive a fluorescent vest with an ID number and also occasionally take tests about traffic safety rules.

The local legislation also calls for $50 fine for each infraction, at the discretion of the Hoboken Police Department, Parking Utility, and/or the Transportation and Parking Department. The measure took effect on June 1st.

While Police Chief Steven Aguiar, along with other ranking officers, had expressed concerns about being able to enforce the local legislation, they have now taken the initiative to do so.

“Very well received by the community we love to see you in the streets!!” Presinzano wrote on response on X.

In a separate post, he noted that the bike rack at Newark and River Streets, near City Hall which is located in the 1st Ward, will post a “No e-bikes” sign next week, as well as mentioning that the city plans on rolling out a pilot program for resident only bike parking.
