Former Jersey City Councilwoman-at-Large Louis Shaw, the first female elected to the seat back in 1973, is backing Catherine Healy in the Ward D runoff race.

“I enthusiastically endorse Catherine Healy Tiscornia for Councilwoman in Ward D! I’ve watched Catherine show up for our community again and again, always willing to listen and ready to put in the work,” Shaw said in a statement.
“I know she will be a fighter for us, someone who understands our neighborhoods and isn’t afraid to advocate for what residents truly need. It’s time to make history and elect our first woman councilperson in Ward D as I made history by being elected the first councilwoman at large in Jersey City. Catherine’s leadership, energy, and compassion are exactly what Ward D deserves.”
Shaw, the aunt of outgoing Councilwoman-at-Large Amy DeGise, who didn’t seek re-election, is famous locally for leading the charge to repeal a local law that barred women from patronizing or working in bars.
The city council voted 8-1 to repeal the ban on February 19th, 1974.
“I’m honored to have Lois’s support. Our ward deserves a strong, accessible voice who will listen, show up, and fight for safer streets, better city services, and real transparency at City Hall. I’m running to make sure every neighborhood in Ward D is heard and represented,” Healy added.
She was the top vote getter in the November 4th general election and will face off with Jake Ephros in the non-partisan December 2nd runoff.
Healy was a part of former Gov. Jim McGreevey’s ticket, while Ephros ran independently, but has since traded endorsements with Ward E Councilman James Solomon – who is running against McGreevey to be the next mayor.
