“I’ve seen the important work Mayor Davis has done rising through the ranks of law enforcement before successfully prioritizing debt reduction and access to affordable housing for all Bayonne residents,” Jones said in a statement.
“We live in unique and chaotic times and his experience and determination would help provide the fresh perspective needed to meet this moment. As Sheriff, I’ve prioritized the enhancement of public safety through innovative policing while working to deepen our department’s community outreach and I believe James Davis is the partner we need to join us in those efforts.”
Jones, the son of New Jersey Democratic State Committee Chair LeRoy Jones – also the Dem committee chair in Essex County – was elected to a three-year term in a landslide in November.
Davis, who is running with the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO), is a retired police captain that is seeking to unseat Hudson County Sheriff Frank Schillari, who is seeking a sixth term on Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop’s gubernatorial slate.
“Today’s endorsement is another critical building block in advance of June 10th’s election. Sheriff Jones has exhibited tremendous leadership skills while actively focusing on establishing a strong bond between his office and the community they have sworn to protect,” stated Davis.
“His office serves as a tremendous example of the great work the County Sheriff’s Office can accomplish when they have the right leadership.”
It’s the second endorsement from a sitting sheriff that Davis received this week, with Somerset County Sheriff Darrin Russo vocalizing his support on Monday, as HCV first reported.
The primary elections in New Jersey are on June 10th.
