U.S. Rep. Albio Sires (D-8) is reacting to the killing of U.S. Capitol Police Officer William F. Evans, where a second officer was injured, stating that “these law enforcement officers deserve our profound respect and gratitude.”

“It is with deep sadness that I learn of the death of U.S. Capitol Police Officer William F. Evans, and the hospitalization of another USCP officer, following the attack at Capitol complex barricades earlier this afternoon,” he said in a statement.
“Capitol police officers are asked to put their lives on the line every day to protect the Capitol complex and the people who work there, and these law enforcement officers deserve our profound respect and gratitude. While the investigation into today’s events unfolds, I will continue to monitor the situation. I offer my deepest condolences to Officer Evans’ loved ones, and pray they are comforted in this difficult time.”
Shortly after 1 p.m. this afternoon, a man in a blue sedan rammed his vehicle into the North Barricade at the U.S. Capitol, striking two police officers. He then exited the vehicle and ran towards the officers with a knife before being fatally shot, authorities said.
Acting U.S. Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman later announced that Evans was the fallen officer, noting that he was an 18-year veteran of the department and asked for thoughts and prayers for his family.
“It is with profound sadness that I share the news of the passing of Officer William ‘Billy’ Evans this afternoon from injuries he sustained following an attack at the North Barricade by a lone assailant,” she said in a statement.
“Officer Evans had been a member of the United States Capitol Police for 18 years. He began his USCP service on March 7, 2003, and was a member of the Capitol Division’s First Responder’s Unit. Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers.”
Citing four senior law enforcement officials, NBC News has identified the suspect as Noah Green, a 25-year-old Indiana man.
