Also a board member of the New Jersey Chapter of the American Correctional Association, Aviles has worked at the Hudson County since 1989, climbing the ranks from sergeant to deputy director – before being named director in March 2004.

Among his many accolades, Aviles was honored by the Garden State Employment and Training Association with a public service award on September 17, 2014.

His replacement has not been named yet, though according to law enforcement sources, who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the Department of Corrections Deputy Director – Tish Nalls – is likely to serve as an interim director before a permanent replacement is named.

The former deputy director, Kirk Eady, is currently awaiting sentencing for federal wire tapping charges, which is currently scheduled for September 30 at U.S. District Court in Newark.

Aviles did not return calls seeking comment on Thursday.
