Police: Woman punches Guttenberg cop after getting caught shoplifting from liquor store

A woman punched a Guttenberg police officer after getting caught shoplifting from a local liquor store early this morning, police said.

Christine E. O’Brien, 39, of North Bergen, was charged with defiant trespass, shoplifting, being a fugitive from justice, and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, according to Police Lt. Aleksandar Ramadanovic.

This morning at approximately 12:35 a.m., members of the Guttenberg Police Department’s Patrol Division responded to Benny’s Liquors, located at 7000 Park Ave., on a report that a woman that shoplifted after trespassing.

Once on the scene, officers located O’Brien and during their on-scene investigation, officers discovered that she had an active warrant out of the State of New York for a parole violation.

Officers were also able to recover some of the stolen items, found with O’Brien, and returned them to the establishment. She was then placed under arrest and transported to the Guttenberg Police Department for her arrest processing.

After getting processed for her initial charges, O’Brien allegedly became combative and punched an officer in the face, leading to the aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer charge.

Upon the completion of her arrest processing, O’Brien was issued three complaint warrants and lodged in the Hudson County Correctional Center.

“This incident marks the third occasion within the last two years that Ms. O’Brien was apprehended and charged with being a fugitive from justice during her attempts to avoid the restrictions outlined in her supervised release agreement in the State of New York,” Ramadanovic added.
