Newark woman, 63, charged in Kearny hit-and-run that badly injured pedestrian, 76

A 63-year-old Newark woman has been charged in a Kearny hit-and-run that badly injured a 76-year-old pedestrian at the end of last month, Hudson County Prosector Esther Suarez announced.

Sonia Salazar, 63, of Newark, is charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle collision resulting in serious bodily injury, endangering an injured victim, and causing serious Injury while driving on a revoked/suspended license, Suarez said in a statement.

She was arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Secaucus on Thursday, June 6th, and released pending her first court appearance, which is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, June 20th.

Shortly after 7 a.m. on May 30th, the Kearny Police Department was notified of a pedestrian struck at the intersection of Kearny Avenue and Columbia Avenue.

Responding officers located a male victim, later identified as a 76-year-old Kearny resident, with serious injuries. The striking vehicle did not remain at the scene.

The victim was transported by Emergency Medical Services to University Hospital in Newark for treatment and was initially in critical condition.
