Jabbour voices support of Hoboken’s Marineview tenants ahead of court hearing

Hoboken Councilwoman-at-Large Emily Jabbour, a candidate for mayor, is voicing her support for Marineview Plaza tenants ahead of a municipal court hearing scheduled for tomorrow.

” … Despite a determination by the City of Hoboken that Marineview tenants are entitled to rent control protections, its management recently attempted to increase rents by 9.8% – on top of an attempted 11% increase just one year ago,” she said in a statement.

“On Thursday, February 27th at 8:30AM Marineview management is expected to appear in Municipal Court to defend its position that it is not subject to Hoboken’s Rent Control laws (which would cap rent increases at CPI or 5%, whichever is lower). I’ll be there in support of my neighbors and the Marineview Tenant’s Association because making sure existing residents have a safe and affordable place to live is core to what I believe in.”

Marineview Plaza building management wrote a letter to tenants on November 30th stating that they could potentially have a 9.8 percent rent hike this year, citing an inability to reach an agreement with city officials, as HCV first reported.

Mayor Ravi Bhalla then took the position that the building is in violation of the city’s rent control ordinance shortly before city officials hosted a closed door meeting with MVP residents.

“Today I call on Marineview Plaza management to uphold their end of the bargain and acknowledge that they are subject to Hoboken’s rent control laws and register accordingly. Let’s avoid this litigation, which will not only cost them money, but more importantly cost tenants their peace of mind,” Jabbour continued.

“While I hope building management will heed my call – if they don’t – I would like the tenants of Marineview Plaza to know that I’ve got your backs. I’ll be there every step of the way, working with you and your tenant’s association to make sure justice is served and you get the protections you deserve.”

MVP management did not immediately return an email seeking comment.
