“This administration is seriously threatening our community, and we must respond decisively to protect Jersey City residents. If nobody can stop this at the federal level, we will do everything in our power to stop it here,” Ali said in a statement.

His plan includes enhanced protections against U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations, funding legal defense for immigrants facing deportation without due process, and ensuring local agencies abide by judicial orders.

Ali’s proposal also introduces a Federal Worker Recovery Program, offering essential job training and placement services to local workers impacted by sweeping federal layoffs. This would also prioritize the hiring of laid-off federal workers in city agencies.

Also, to counter the economic harm caused by federal tariffs, Ali proposes establishing a Tariff Relief Fund, providing targeted grants and tax relief for struggling small businesses, as well as expanded assistance for rent and utilities to help businesses remain open.

Additionally, Ali will advocate for a Safe City Ordinance to formally resist ICE collaboration, protect resident privacy, and guarantee due process.

He also commits to supporting statewide measures like the Immigrant Trust Act, and cooperating with other mayors across the state to collaborate on municipal defense against federal overreach.

The non-partisan November 4th mayoral race also includes former Gov. Jim McGreevey, Ward E Councilman James Solomon, Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2), and Council President Joyce Watterman.
