“Campaigns must be rooted in listening. Since launching my candidacy for mayor, I have prioritized hearing from every corner of our city. No neighborhood has been more forthcoming or passionate than Greenville,” Watterman said in a statement.

“Overwhelmingly, residents voiced both their disappointment with the current array of candidates and their hope for more direct representation. Our campaign is responding by giving Greenville the leader they asked for—someone who lives in the neighborhood, serves its families, and deeply understands its challenges and aspirations.”

Carment, a pastor, youth advocate, and longtime Greenville resident, is recognized for his hands-on work in community development and social outreach.

His leadership at Liberty Church and New City Kids has touched the lives of thousands of families throughout Jersey City. Carment and the Watterman team reconsidered his candidacy at-large after ongoing dialogues with Greenville’s residents.

“I’m humbled by this show of support and by the trust my community has placed in me. This race isn’t about titles or ambitions; it’s about responding to what people truly need. Greenville deserves strong, accountable representation at City Hall—someone who knows their streets, struggles, and stories firsthand,” Carment added.

“I am honored to accept this challenge for my home neighborhood, and I thank Councilwoman Watterman for her commitment to grassroots democracy.”

Watterman emphasized that this change reflects her continued pledge to “inclusive growth and representative government” and feels that Greenville needs change.

“Greenville has been clear: it’s time for a new generation of leadership and direct advocacy. Our team will continue adapting and amplifying the voices of each ward, with real opportunities for input and shared progress. David Carment will be the champion Greenville needs to move forward collectively,” she noted.

The Ward A council race currently has incumbent Denise Ridley seeking re-election on Ward E Councilman James Solomon’s ticket, Pam Johnson running with Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea (D-2), Brandi Warren teaming up with former Gov. Jim McGreevey, and Tracy Sims seeking the seat on ex-Board of Education President Mussab Ali’s slate.

The Jersey City municipal elections are set for November 4th.
