WNY Internal Affairs investigating police car in Bayonne during Assembly race

The West New York Police Department’s Internal Affairs division is investigating why a town police car was parked in front of District 31 Assembly candidate Nicholas Chiaravalloti’s campaign headquarters in Bayonne this morning into early this afternoon, according to town spokesman Pablo Fonseca.

“There is an active internal affairs investigation that has been opened,” Fonseca responded when asked why a West New York police car was parked in front of Chiaravalloti’s campaign headquarters at 429 Broadway in Bayonne today.

Chiaravalloti’s campaign manager, Jeff Meyer, did not immediately return a call seeking comment, but a source close to the campaign – who spoke under the condition of anonymity – said they were under the impression nothing improper occurred here.

“The police unions were encouraged to come out and support political candidates [in this election], and a police officer, with permission, took a car here,” the source said, adding that the campaign was operating under the impression that the officer had showed up as part of a “union-sanctioned thing.”

As only Hudson County View reported yesterday, the State Police Officers Benevolent Association (PBA) and PBA Local No. 7 endorsed the Hudson County Democratic Organization’s picks of Angela McKnight and Chiaravalloti for Assembly.

According to an email obtained by Hudson County View, PBA members were asked to help the McKnight/Chiaravalloti campaign in the streets and at the polls on Election Day.
