West New York teacher asks for community support for terminally ill first grader

West New York teacher Jennifer Grom asked for community support for one of her students, seven year-old Crissmarie Sevilla, who is battling terminal pediatric brain cancer. In just over two weeks, her GoFundMe page has raised an incredible $25,000 for the family.

“I have been teaching here in West New York, first grade for the past 11 years,” Grom said at the town’s International Women’s Day luncheon at Son Cubano this afternoon.

“I often joked that I had seen it all … until this year. One of my little six year olds – bouncing, vibrant, happy, loving school – was out of the blue diagnosed with terminal pediatric brain cancer. For those of you who don’t know, terminal means there will be no cure for little Crissmarie.”

Later, she explained why donations will go a long way for Crissmarie in her family.

“$25,000 is life changing for this family. We’re hoping that this family can help their other two children, who are also in the West New York school system, a four year-old and a three year-old. We’re hoping this money will give them a trip somewhere, help them spend some time [together], take some time off of work.”
