German Villalta, 23, of West New York, was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and aggravated assault, according to town spokesman JP Escobar.

On Sunday at approximately 2:50 a.m., the West New York Police Department received a call for service for a dispute in progress, with shots fired in the area of the 6000th block on Broadway Ave.

Patrol Units and detectives arrived on the scene and an investigation ensued. Witnesses reported that the suspect, Villalta, fired a weapon into the air twice. While the type of weapon was unknown, two 9mm casings were recovered from the scene, Escobar said.

After the shots were fired, Villalta then got involved in a dispute with his girlfriend, 25, in front of his house. Medical attention was provided to the victim, but she refused to be assessed by the ambulance staff and no injuries were reported.
