“I’m running because Hoboken needs leaders who put residents first and demand accountability from City Hall. Hoboken needs leaders with real expertise and a track record of standing up for residents,” Urtecho said in a statement.

“I’m running for Council because I believe in Tiffanie’s vision: a City Hall that’s transparent, accountable, and focused on delivering real results for our community.”

Urtecho challenged Hoboken 5th Ward Phil Cohen in November 2023 and lost by a margin of roughly 57-43 in a race where every incumbent seeking re-election won.

In that contest, both Fisher and Urtecho advocated for responsible cannabis rules at the local level, with the latter spearheading an effort to enforce the “600-foot rule” for the Blue Violets dispensary. The business owners ended up winning the case on appeal.

Urtecho has remained active in municipal government issues since then and was widely expected to join Fisher’s slate sooner than later.

“Tiffanie is the leader Hoboken needs at this moment. She’s not afraid to ask hard questions or stand up for what’s right,” she further stated.

“She brings unmatched experience, financial discipline, and the courage to challenge the status quo. I trust her, and I know she will be a different kind of mayor — one who delivers results, not excuses.”

Fisher of course expressed enthusiasm for Urtecho joining her ticket. In additional to the mayor’s seat, the non-partisan November 4th municipal elections will also see three council-at-large and the 6th Ward council seats up for grabs.

“Liz is exactly the kind of person we need on the Council — principled, prepared, and focused on solving problems. She brings a deep understanding of our community and the kind of energy and accountability Hoboken residents deserve,” she added.

Urtecho is just the second declared council-at-large candidate for the fall races, with Hoboken Rent Control and Stabilization board member Alfredo Veloce declaring he’d run with 4th Ward Councilman Ruben Ramos last month, as HCV first reported.

  1. john- can you more clearly identify who won the lawsuit w/ blue violets
it reads as though “they” is fisher/urtecho and i thought that blue violets won but i might not fully understand.

  2. My guess is that Russo and Ramos would have liked having Liz on their respective tickets – she ran a fair minded campaign in the 5th Ward and is not afraid to roll up her sleeves when necessary. Not a surprise, but a good partner for Fisher. She strikes me as someone who will reach across the aisle to get things done – and we need more people like that.

  3. Ramos and Russo both have the same limited base and they will cancel each other.
Russo is being heavily financed by out of Hoboken developers that are expecting him to live up to his “you do for me. I do for you” statement fro his infamous Big Rig video.

    • Council member advocates to sue and spend 30 mil in land deals to save a few views on NYC for themselves, then flips the properties for million$$$

    • Sounds like this is racially based like the old trope rumored to be said by Fisher that Hoboken won’t support a Mayor in a Turban… Now it’s “Limited base” You mean Blacks and Hispanics?

Uh if Fisher was Honest, she would look at the past elections and see how well he did city wide over the years.
If she is counting on Hoboken being racist in order to win, then maybe we need to believe that “turban ” rumor wasn’t a rumor…

  4. This is Team Weed Killer, sorry, but Tiffany is anti- EVERYTHING
