“Beginning on Monday, April 19th, 2021, teachers will return to school buildings to continue remote learning, and on Monday, May 3rd, 2021, Union City public schools will begin to welcome students back for in-person learning,” Abbato said in the letter.

“Everyone will be temperature-screened when entering each morning, and anyone with a fever of 100.4 or above will be sent home. All students and staff will be required to wear masks and/or face shields at all times (which will be provided) and classrooms have been configured to maximize social distancing.”

She continued that all in-person session will run from 8:30 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. and that students will be divided into Group A and Group B via last names, ensuring that siblings will be in the same group.

Additionally, Group A will meet on Mondays and Tuesdays, with Group be convening on Thursdays and Fridays in order for school facilities to receive deep cleanings on Wednesdays.

Grab-and-go meals will also be available, with seven-day meal packets still an option for parents who chose to continue to stick with remote learning – with pickups made possible on Wednesday.

Parents are encouraged to fill out an online survey about returning to school by March 31st.

“We very much look forward to welcoming everyone back to school in May, and we ask for your cooperation in helping us to ensure that everyone adheres to safety guidelines. Please know that our plans, preparations, and scheduling are continuously evolving to address the changing health situation,” Abbato also wrote.

The Union City BOE joins the Bayonne Public Schools with a May 3rd date to return to classrooms, with the school districts in North Bergen and West New York aiming for April 19th.

The Jersey City Board of Education is aiming for just slightly later with a target date of April 22nd, while Secaucus reopened their schools back on March 8th.
