At 11:14 a.m. today, the Bayonne Fire Department was dispatched to 120 West 44th St. on a reported structure fire. Arriving companies found heavy smoke and fire coming from the second floor of the two-story home, Weaver in a statement.

Firefighters used multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire which was brought under control at 11:43 a.m. A second alarm was brought to the scene for relief due to high heat conditions.

One resident of the second floor was burned and transported to a local hospital by McCabe EMS. One Bayonne firefighter is also being treated for a minor injury.

A total of 9 people are displaced from the two-family building and they are under the care of the American Red Cross. A fire investigation is underway, however, at this time the fire appears to be accidental in nature.

“Again, Bayonne’s firefighters responded within minutes of the call and made quick work of a fire which could have easily spread to the house next door which was only feet away. The second house suffered only exterior damage due to our firefighter’s quick work,” Weaver added.

“I also want to thank our mutual aid partners for backfilling our city fire houses and to the Bayonne Fire Canteen for providing assistance to our teams.”
