“We still live in the Tale of Two Cities. Some of us have what we need, and others are left behind. I’m running to change that. Jersey City must be one, whole, united city where EVERY person is treated with dignity,” Nalls said in a statement.
“I know what it’s like to struggle, to need help, and be told you don’t qualify. No one should be turned away. Not on my watch.”
Born in Birmingham, Alabama, and raised in Jersey City, Nalls overcame early hardship and transformed her struggles into a lifetime of service.
Also the founder of Community Treasures, the local nonprofit provides essentials such as clothing, food, strollers, and car seats to thousands of residents in need.
She also currently serves as an aide to Ward F Councilman Frank “Educational” Gilmore and is a regular advocate for a host of issues at city council meetings.
“Tina is the kind of leader every city needs. She doesn’t wait for change — she builds it,” Ali declares.
“Her work across Jersey City has already touched so many lives, and I’m honored to have her join Team Ali. I know she’ll be a powerful advocate for all of Jersey City on the council.”
Her official campaign kickoff will take place outside her Community Treasures office, 53 Virginia Ave, on Sunday at 5 p.m.
Nalls is the third running mate announced by Ali, joining Ira Guilford in Ward A and Shabad Khan in Ward C.
The non-partisan November 4th council-at-large race for three seats already has a full field.
Hudson County Commissioner Bill O’Dea’s (D-2) at-large team is Councilman-at-Large Daniel Rivera, Kristen Zadroga-Hart, and Saundra Robinson Green.
Ward E Councilman James Solomon at-large slate is former Council President Rolando Lavarro, Mamta Singh, and Michael Griffin and former Gov. Jim McGreevey is running retired Police Lt. Israel “Izzy” Nieves and Art House Executive Director Meredith Burns.
He has not announced his third and final at-large candidate yet.
Finally, Council President Joyce Watterman’s at-large team is Rev. Tami Weaver-Henry, former board of education candidate Kenny Reyes, and Liberty Church JC pastor Dave Carment.
