State Sen. Sandra Cunningham (D-31) went on the record with Hudson County View about a new Hudson County Prosecutor, Bail Reform, and “Ban the Box.”

State Senator Sandra Cunningham (D-31) spoke with Hudson County View about two pieces of legislation recently signed into law by Gov. Chris Christie, Bail Reform and the Opportunity to Compete Act – otherwise known as “Ban the Box.”

Before answering questions about the legislation, the senator briefly spoke about the status of a new Hudson County Prosecutor.

  1. Thanks for this report, Michael J. Shurin. While I don’t question the sincerity of Senator Cunningham and her fellow Trenton lawmakers who voted for this si-called bail reform, I question the wisdom of it. I believe the 8th Ammendment to our U.S. Constitution was the lodestar that resulted in the PRIOR NJ law on this subject which PRECLUDED the denial of bail in all but for caputal offenses.I realize that the Federal Bail Reform Act of 1984, which was held up by the courts, buttresses this latest bill that has passed. However, this sets a continued dangerous legal slippery slope for an INNOCENT person who is summarily DENIED bail.
