Maura Diaz, 58, was found unconscious inside Union City High School earlier today and responding police and EMS pronounced her dead on the scene around 11 a.m., according to city spokeswoman Erin Knoedler.

She had worked for the Union City Board of Education in some capacity for the past 20 years and was most recently employed as a security guard at the high school, Knoedler added, also noting that the death has been deemed non-suspicious.

Diaz was found dead in a closet and the manner of death appeared to be strangulation via hanging, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told Hudson County View.

“The passing of Maura Diaz is a true tragedy. I have known Ms. Diaz and her family for over 20 years. She is a dear friend and I am deeply saddened to learn of her passing,” Mayor Brian Stack said in a statement.

“Union City is a tight knit community and when one of us is in pain, we all feel it. As we enter a new school year, this is a jarring reminder to take care and comfort each other.”

Superintendent of Schools Silvia Abbato also sent her condolences over Diaz’s sudden death.

“Maura Diaz was a wonderful employee and her absence will be felt by the Board of Education and the community. Our hearts are heavy today as we try to make sense of this loss. Counselors will be available for any students or staff during this difficult time,” she added.
