Sources: Daycare of WNY BOE trustee shut down indefinitely by the town

El Jardin Infantil Early Learning Center, the daycare owned by West New York Board of Education trustee Lorena Portillo on Hudson Avenue, was shut down by the town indefinitely last week due to a number of building violations, sources exclusively told Hudson County View today.

Sources, who spoke under the condition of anonymity since they were not authorized to speak on the matter, said that the building’s temporary license expired on November 22, causing the state Department of Community Affairs’ Division of Fire Safety to contact West New York officials on the matter.

A subsequent fire inspection by the municipality revealed that the early learning center did not have a sufficient fire exit and also had not passed annual inspections for fire alarms and sprinklers, leading to the facility getting shut down on Tuesday.

When Hudson County View arrived at the building around 3:00 p.m. on Monday, no one answered the doorbell and the lights inside the building were off.

Portillo, who was appointed to the board of education at the October 8 meeting by a vote of 5-3, did not respond to an email from Hudson County View seeking comment.
