Sources: Cosmo Cirillo to replace Ruben Vargas as West New York commissioner

Cosmo Cirillo, a former West New York Board of Education president and the current senior advisor to Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto (D-32), will be appointed as a town commissioner at a special meeting Tuesday morning. The meeting was called specifically to swear in Ruben Vargas’ replacement.

According to sources who spoke under the condition of anonymity, Cirillo will be sworn in by North Bergen Mayor/State Senator (D-32) Nick Sacco and will be on Mayor Felix Roque’s re-election ticket for the May 2015 municipal election in West New York.

Cirillo, 27, is also a former staffer for Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez (D-32) and was also a staunch critic of Roque at one point.

“Cosmo is one of many people that have been interviewed [for the vacant commissioner seat],” town spokesman Pablo Fonseca told Hudson County View.

Fonseca added that Cirillo’s resume is impressive, but did not outright confirm or deny that he would be joining the West New York Board of Commissioners to oversee the Department of Public Affairs next week.

As Hudson County View first reported, Vargas resigned for undisclosed personal reasons on Thursday afternoon, just one day after Gabriel Rodriguez was sworn in as the commissioner of the department of public works in West New York.
