The last time this venue has hosted a boxing event, which boasted marquee names such as Bayonne native Chuck Wepner and former heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, was close to 15 years ago.
McDermott and Jayme, business partners at LGM Promotions, collaborated with Global Boxing to organize the very first televised boxing event at the Armory.
The main event was a WBU Featherweight title fight where John “Fast Hands†Franklin (9-0-1, 4 KO), an American Army veteran, faced off against Josh Crespo (3-2-3, 1 KO). The contest ended in a draw.
The opening fight was between Wang Zhimin (2-0-0) of China against Jesus Lule (7-11,0 KOs) of Fort Myers, Florida. Wang Zhimin was triumphant in the junior welterweight scrap via unanimous decision.
Jose Ortiz (3-2-2, 1 KO), of Jersey City, fought to a draw against Tyrone Luckey (5-4-2, 5 KO) with a score of 38/38, 38/38/ & 36/40 in a junior lightweight matchup.
Jersey City’s Brayon Rendan defeated Frank Jordon (0-4-0) in the welterweight division, scoring a TKO finish in the fourth round.
Tyrell Wright (7-0-1, 5 KOs), another Jersey City native, defeated Alando Pugh (1-4-1, 1 KO) in the heavyweight division with definitive second round knockout.
For the WBU Youth Junior Featherweight Title, Stevie Quinn Jr. (7-2-0, 1KO) of Newtownard, Northern Ireland, defeated Stephon McIntyre (2-6-2). McDermott was in Quinn’s corner for the fight.
Proceeds from the event were donated to the National Guard State Family Readiness Council.
Jayme also donated 300 tickets to local Boys & Girls Clubs and County Recreation Centers to help reintroduce the sport of boxing to the younger generation.
