Gov. Mikie Sherrill (D) has signed an executive order to have United States and New Jersey flags fly at half-staff to honor late former U.S. Rep. Frank Guarini, who passed away at 101 years old on June 20th.

“Frank Guarini dedicated more than a lifetime to serving New Jersey and our country with distinction in uniform, in the State Senate, in Congress, and through his extraordinary philanthropic work,” Sherrill said in a statement.
“His leadership helped shape our state and strengthen our nation. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all those whose lives were touched by his remarkable generosity.”
Her 20th executive order since taking office in January highlights several of Guarini’s accomplishments, including chairing New Jersey Delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 1984, serving as a US delegate to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in
London in 1990, and sponsoring the Employee Educational Assistance Act of 1991.
Guarini, who was the oldest living former congressman in the US at the time of his passing, had the new $350 million Hudson County courthouse named after him for donating the land where the building was constructed, with the ribbon cutting held earlier this month.
Sherrill’s tribute is similar to what Hudson County Executive Craig Guy did on June 22nd, having all flags on county property to be flown at half-staff until further notice.
Guy was among several Hudson County officials who paid tribute to Guarini shortly after his passing, as HCV first reported.
He served in the House between 1979 and 1993, prior to that he was elected to serve in the state Senate between 1966 until 1972.
