Fraudulent GoFundMe pages are being set up in the name of late Jersey City Ward D Councilman Michael Yun’s daughter-in-law just one day after his passing, according to a message from his family and staff.

“During this difficult time The Yun Family has expressed their concerns that scammers are claiming to be relatives of Councilman Michael Yun. Creating fraudulent “Go Fund Me” pages and creating clone/ghost accounts under his daughter-in-law’s name Jaclyn Yun,” a message on Michael Yun’s Facebook page says.

“It is disrespectful, disgusting and against the law. Ghosting a form of identity theft attempting to collect funds through ‘GoFundMe’ PLEASE do not get solicited by these people.”

The message goes on to say that no one should accept friend requests from anyone affiliated with these pages and to report these pages to the municipal prosecutor’s office (who can be reached here).

The message is signed by the Yun family and his staff members. There are currently no legitimate GoFundMe pages being run by friends or family.

Michael Yun, elected to two council terms in 2013 and 2017, respectively, died yesterday after a long battle with COVID-19. His passing has left the city in a state of shock and his accolades have received recognition throughout the state.

With public gatherings still out of the question in the midst of the coronavirus crisis, Jersey City is planning a remote candlelight vigil for the renowned councilman on Friday evening.

The Jersey City Council has also postponed their municipal business, originally set to meet on Monday and Wednesday, until to next week.

Editor’s note: This story has been updated to reflect that an error in a message that appeared Councilman Yun’s Facebook page had been corrected.
