Lavarro was elected to council in 2011 before becoming president in 2013. Now, he will continue to serve as president until 2017.

“I understand there is much work to be done”, Lavarro told the council, “I will weigh more judicially than the last two years.”

“I love serving Jersey City as council president. I’m humbled to have the opportunity to continue in this role and will do my best council president,” Council President Lavarro told Hudson County View,

Councilwoman Joyce Watterman was also elected president pro tempore. The vote was also unanimous.

Lavarro also offered Watterman supportive advice: “Communication is critical for your success over the next two years,” he said.

When Hudson County View asked Watterman about her newly elected role, she responded, “Leadership is not about titles, positions or flow charts: it is about one life influencing another”.
