The grant, funded under the FY 2024 Passenger Ferry Grant Program, will be used to install a wave attenuator at the facility, preventing waves, high tides, and floods from harming vessels and impacting service for customers.
“This grant will ensure that our transit system is more resilient, reliable, and fulfilling the needs of New Jerseyans and people throughout the region,” Menendez said in a statement.
“NJ Transit and NY Waterway play a critical role in our public transportation system, and I’m grateful to the Biden-Harris Department of Transportation for prioritizing these important upgrades to their facilities.”
Menendez serves on the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, where he advocates for funding to improve the reliability of transit infrastructure amd build resiliency against extreme weather.
“The funding and construction of the wave attenuation screen is an essential step in ensuring the safety and modernization of our ferry maintenance facility,” added NY Waterway Chair, President, and CEO Armand Pohan.
“This structure serves the needs of the ferry system and the thousands of riders we serve, as well as the need for resiliency protection of property along the neighboring Weehawken shoreline. We are grateful to our state and federal partners for recognizing the importance of this project through their support, and for the leadership of Representative Menendez, as well as Senator Cory Booker and the office of the late Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr., in helping to secure this critical funding.”
