Prosecutor’s office arrests two Jersey City men for fatally shooting 20-year-old last year

Authorities have arrested two Jersey City men for the fatal shooting of Alshaakir Talmadge, a 20-year-old city man who was killed on June 14th, 2017, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

On Friday, members of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit arrested Oriental Hamlet, 19, and Bijan Cooper, 20, both of Jersey City, in connection with the June 14, 2017, murder of Alshaakir Talmadge, Suarez said in a statement.

The suspects were arrested at the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office in Jersey City without incident.

Hamlet and Cooper have been charged with murder, conspiracy to commit murder, possession of a weapon(firearm) for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a
weapon. Additionally, Cooper has also been charged with making a false report to law enforcement, officials said.

Hamlet and Cooper were processed and transported to the Hudson County Correctional Facility in Kearny to await their first appearance.

Suarez credited the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit for the investigation and arrest with the assistance of the Jersey City Police Department.

On June 14, 2017, at approximately 10:10 p.m., Jersey City police responded to the area
of Martin Luther King Drive and Union Street on a report of a male gunshot victim, police said.

Upon arrival, the responding officers found Talmadge, 20, of Jersey City, lying on the
sidewalk across from 131 Union Street near Martin Luther King Drive.

Talmadge, who suffered apparent gunshot wounds to the upper body during the incident, was unresponsive and was immediately treated at the scene by Emergency Medical Services, authorities said.

He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center by EMS where he was pronounced dead at approximately 11:40 p.m. The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office has found the cause of death to be multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death to be homicide, police said.
