A fatal shooting in Jersey City on Friday was the fifth homicide of 2024, marking the first fatality in the city since May, Hudson County Prosecutor Esther Suarez announced.

On Friday, October 11th, shortly before 5 p.m., the Jersey City Police Department was notified of shots fired in the area of Garfield Avenue and Brown Place, Suarez said in a statement.
Responding officers located a male victim – later identified as Kashyne Grant, 19, of Jersey City – with an apparent gunshot wound to the upper body.
He was transported to Jersey City Medical Center for treatment, where he was pronounced dead just after 10 a.m. on Monday, October 14th. The cause and manner of death are pending the findings of the Regional Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit and the Jersey City PD are actively investigating this matter, with no arrests made at this time.

This is the first homicide in Jersey City since a fatal shooting claimed the life of Resheed Wallace, 24, on May 10th.
City officials and community leaders celebrated no fatalities taking place over the summer, a rare feat, just over three weeks ago on September 23rd.
According to statistics provided by the Jersey City Police Department, there were 11 homicides in 2022 and then nine in 2023.
