Michael Monica, 23, of Wharton, was charged with aggravated assault, according to Police Det. Sgt. Jonathan Mecka.

Yesterday, Police Dets. Adam Colon and John Quinones were in the area of 89 River St. when they witnessed Monica strike another man in the face. The force of the blow knocked the victim to the ground and rendered him unconscious, police said.

As the detectives ran over, they observed the victim lying on his back completely motionless while Monica was fleeing the scene.

At this point, Officer Joesph Dimartino arrived on scene and immediately tended to the victim while Colon and Quinones apprehended Monica a short distance away, officials said.

Ultimately, the victim was transported to the local hospital where he was later discharged. Monica was processed for aggravated assault and also released with a summons to appear in court, authorities said.
