Police: Scent of weed during Bayonne traffic stop leads to man being caught with handgun

A traffic stop in Bayonne where an officer recognized the odor of marijuana led to a Bronx man being caught with an illegal handgun, police said.

Moleak R. Battice, 21, Bronx, New York, was charged with possession of a handgun for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a handgun, and possession of less than 50 grams of marijuana, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

At around 10:59 p.m. last night, officers conducted a motor vehicle stop of a silver colored BMW, later determined to be operated by Battice, in the area of 52nd Street and Avenue E.

During the stop, officers detected an odor of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and conducted a search. During the search, the officers recovered a marijuana cigarette and a .22 cal. semi-automatic handgun loaded with 8 .22 cal. rounds.

As a result, he was subsequently placed under arrest and processed, officials said.
