Hanif Gibbs, 31, of Newark, was charged with theft of services, bail jumping and traffic violations, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.
At 9 a.m. this morning, a Port Authority police officer was on patrol at the Jersey City side of the Holland Tunnel and saw Gibbs driving a 2002 Infinity sedan while using his cell phone, authorities said.
Gibbs then drove through the EZ Pass lane without a visible EZ Pass device. The “toll unpaid†violation sign appeared as he continued through the lane, police said.
The suspect was then stopped by police and a check with the EZ Pass administration showed that Gibbs owed $3,072.00 in violations and fees, officials said.
Gibbs’ vehicle was also past due for an inspection, who also had an active warrant out of Springfield for $300.00 and another one out of Irvington for $229, authorities said.
The suspect was placed under arrest, later stating he did not own an EZ Pass device before he was taken to Hudson County Jail in Kearny, police said.
