Police: Man uses retractable license plate to avoid paying toll in Jersey City

A man was caught using a retractable license plate on his motorcycle in an attempt to drive through an EZPass toll in Jersey City without being detected, police said.

Henry Pogue, 51, of Roselle, was charged with theft of services, possession of drug paraphernalia, unclear license plates, and possession of controlled dangerous substance in a motor vehicle, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

At about 4:15 p.m. yesterday, Port Authority police near the Holland Tunnel in Jersey City saw the suspect riding a 2010 Victory motorcycle through a EZPass only lane, officials said.

As the suspects motorcycle drove through, Port Authority police saw the license plate of the vehicle retracted under the motorcycle so that the plate could not be read, authorities said.

Port Authority police approached the suspect and saw the suspect activate a toggle switch and the license plate began to unfold from underneath the motorcycle, police said.

Pogue admitted he had not paid the toll and had no EZPass, even though he passed through an EZPass only lane. In a pouch on the motorcycle was a metal smoking pipe with suspected marijuana residue and a small container of suspected marijuana, officials said.

He is due in Jersey City Municipal Court on July 26, Pentangelo added.
