Police: Man arrested in Bayonne after getting caught sleeping in car with loaded handgun

A man was arrested in Bayonne late last night after getting caught sleeping in his car with a loaded handgun on the passenger seat, police said.

Riney Smith, 40, of Jersey City, was charged with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a high-capacity magazine, possession of a controlled dangerous substance (heroin), and certain persons not to possess a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

He was taken into custody at 11:36 p.m. from the area of 185 East 22nd Street. Officers responded to the area on a report of a man asleep in a vehicle and a handgun in plain view on the front passenger seat.

Upon arrival, officers located the vehicle in question and discovered the driver, later identified as Smith, asleep in the driver seat and a gun clearly visible resting on the front passenger seat.

Officers were able to safely wake Smith and recover the loaded 9mm handgun equipped with a large capacity magazine and a search of the vehicle also led to the recovery of heroin.

Smith was placed under arrest and a search incident to his arrest led to the recovery of marijuana from his person, authorities said.
