Ashley Pitre, 31, who is homeless, was charged with theft on Thursday, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

On Monday, June 25th, a 26-year-old Bayonne woman reported that a relative of her’s allowed an acquaintance of his, identified as Pitre, to spend the night in the basement for shelter, officials said.

After spending the night, Pitre left the residence in the early morning. When the victim went to the basement to check on laundry, she realized that Pitre had removed several items of clothing from a clothes dryer without the victim’s knowledge and permission, authorities said.

The value of the clothing was estimated to be $1,000. An investigation led to Pitre being positively identified as the actor of the theft and a warrant was issued for her arrest, police said.

After Pitre appeared in Bayonne Municipal Court on Thursday for an unrelated arrest, she was escorted to police headquarters, arrested, and charged for the theft, officials said.
