Police: Hoboken man busted with 88 bags of heroin at Journal Square fountain

A Hoboken man was busted with 88 bags of heroin at the Journal Square fountain in Jersey City this morning, police said.

Robert Pipher, 59, of Hoboken, was charged with possession of controlled dangerous substance (heroin) with intent to distribute and intent to distribute CDS within 500 feet of a park, according to Port Authority police spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

At about 11:00 a.m. today, in the area of the Journal Square fountain, Port Authority Police Officer Jamie Oliva saw the suspect engage in a hand to hand exchange of cash for a quantity of suspected narcotics in glassine envelopes, authorities said.

Oliva interviewed the suspect who admitted to possessing heroin. The suspect was placed under arrest and a search yielded 85 glassine bags of suspected heroin on him, for a total of 88 bags.

There was no disruption to transportation due to the arrest.
