Dennys Narvaez, 33, of Bayonne, was charged with endangering the welfare of a child and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Narvaez was taken into custody at approximately 8:54 a.m. from the area of 28th Street and Avenue C.
Officers responded to the area after witnesses reported that they had just observed a man, later identified as Narvaez, pick up a tree limb and strike a toddler with it before picking him up by the hair and carrying him away.
With an article of the toddler’s clothing left at the scene, Bayonne Police K-9 Officer Ranger and his handler were able to track his scent.
The scent led officers to a nearby apartment complex where officers located Narvaez
and the three-year-old toddler inside an apartment. The ensuing investigation led to Narvaez being placed under arrest.
As a precaution, the toddler (in the company of his mother) was evaluated at a nearby hospital as officers were unsure if any injuries were sustained, authorities said.
