Keith A. Cunniffe, Jr., 34, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Cunniffe was taken into custody at approximately 6:25 p.m. from the area of Merritt Street and Avenue C. Officers responded to the area of 32nd Street and Avenue C on a report of a large fight in the middle of the street.

During the on-scene investigation, officers learned that two black sedans pulled into the area where numerous men, one of whom was identified as Cunniffe, exited the vehicles and he began to punch a 20-year-old male victim in the face numerous times, authorities said.

The males then retreated into their vehicles and fled northbound. Officers were able to locate the vehicle described by a witness in the area of Merritt Street and Avenue C where they conducted a motor vehicle stop.

During that investigation, the occupant of the vehicle was positively identified as Cunniffe and he was placed under arrest. The victim suffered facial injuries as a result of the assault and was treated at the Bayonne Medical Center, officials said.
