Michael Rivera, 30, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Rivera was taken into custody at about 4:50 p.m. yesterday from the area of 49th Street and Avenue C.

Officers responded to the area of 49th Street and Broadway on a report of a fight involving a large crowd and a man, later identified as Rivera, armed with a knife that had fled the scene with another person.

As officers arrived, they learned that multiple individuals engaged in a verbal argument which turned physical when Rivera began to assault another person.

Rivera then brandished a knife and attempted to slash the 17-year-old male victim, but was only able to cut the victim’s jacket. Officers were able to locate Rivera and the other man in the area of 49th Street and Avenue C and detained them for investigation.

As officers investigated, they observed facial injuries on Rivera and recovered a pocket knife on the ground in the immediate area. The investigation led to Rivera being positively identified as the man who pulled the knife, authorities said.
