A 30-year-old Bayonne man has been arrested for attempting to slash a teenage boy, 17, with a knife after a verbal argument escalated, police said.

Michael Rivera, 30, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault, endangering the welfare of a child, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.
Rivera was taken into custody at about 4:50 p.m. yesterday from the area of 49th Street and Avenue C.
Officers responded to the area of 49th Street and Broadway on a report of a fight involving a large crowd and a man, later identified as Rivera, armed with a knife that had fled the scene with another person.
As officers arrived, they learned that multiple individuals engaged in a verbal argument which turned physical when Rivera began to assault another person.
Rivera then brandished a knife and attempted to slash the 17-year-old male victim, but was only able to cut the victim’s jacket. Officers were able to locate Rivera and the other man in the area of 49th Street and Avenue C and detained them for investigation.
As officers investigated, they observed facial injuries on Rivera and recovered a pocket knife on the ground in the immediate area. The investigation led to Rivera being positively identified as the man who pulled the knife, authorities said.
