Police: 38-year-old Bayonne man charged with stabbing juvenile with a pocket knife


A 38-year-old Bayonne man is charged with stabbing a juvenile boy in the back with a pocket knife after a physical altercation quickly escalated, police said.

Devron R. Purvis, 38, of Bayonne, was charged with aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon, according to Police Capt. Eric Amato.

Purvis was taken into custody at around 9:23 p.m. on Friday from the area of 45th Street and Avenue E. Officers responded to the area on a report of a stabbing. Upon arrival, officers observed two men fighting and both were covered in blood.

According to the victim, a juvenile boy from Bayonne, while walking in the area of 45th Street and Avenue E, he was approached by Purvis who began assaulting him. During the altercation, Purvis brandished a folding pocket knife and stabbed the victim in the back.

With the help of nearby residents and a family member, the fight was broken up and the knife used by Purvis was located on the ground. An on-scene investigation confirmed this series of events and Purvis was placed under arrest.

During the altercation, Purvis suffered an eye injury and a laceration to his hand. Both the victim and Purvis were transported to the Jersey City Medical Center to be treated
for their injuries.

According to both parties, neither one is familiar with the other, authorities said.
