A 17-year-old male juvenile was taken into custody at 5:36 p.m. yesterday from the area of West 53rd Street. Officers responded to a report of a disorderly group of individuals seated on the steps of a residence, according to Police Lt. Eric Amato.

Upon arrival, officers confirmed that none of the individuals resided there. As they were speaking with the group, officers observed the 17-year-old teen stand up while holding a long silver-colored object in his right hand, officials said.

When officers asked what the object was, he attempted to conceal it in his hand and hide it from the officers. As officers attempted to ascertain what the object was, the juvenile pushed the officer’s hand away, authorities said.

Suspecting the object was a weapon, the officers were able to control the teen and determined that the object was a knife, police said.

When the juvenile was advised that he was under arrest, he continued to resist by attempting to punch an office and also grabbed another officer’s leg in an attempt to knock him off balance, officials said.

According to authorities, the 17-year-old was successfully placed into handcuffs and a 9- inch switchblade knife was recovered. He was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.
