Op-Ed: ‘Solomon’s words are like a shiny gold object rolling down the street’

In an editorial, Jersey City mayoral candidate Jim McGreevey says that his December 2nd runoff opponent Ward E Councilman James Solomon is trying hard to distract from the issues.

For eight long years, the status quo has been James Solomon.

And under his watch, Jersey City has seen the highest property tax increase in the state, some of the highest rent increases in the nation, and not a single unit of affordable housing built Downtown in that time.

This race isn’t about what James says or I say. It’s about the record, and about who will actually make life more affordable for working families.

James Solomon’s words are like a shiny gold object rolling down the street; folks sometimes get distracted. If I had a record as bad as his, I’d want to distract people, too.

He’s not talking about his ‘Right to Counsel’ bill that didn’t help a single tenant. He’s not talking about his failure to control spiraling property taxes and rents. He’s not talking about his efforts to cut the police budget, which would destroy public safety in Jersey City.

Instead, he’s lumping me in with nonsense MAGA accusations to avoid answering for eight years of non-accomplishment

James has never managed anything, let alone a $700 million municipality. His only experience is as a two-year intern and an adjunct professor,. Jersey City needs leadership that knows how to govern, how to balance a budget, and how to deliver results.

Jersey City is more than Downtown. Jersey City is Greenville and the Hill, Bergen-Lafayette, the West Side, McGinley Square, Journal Square, the Heights, Society Hill, Country Village, every block, every family.

For 12 long years, three terms, we’ve had a mayor from Downtown. We don’t need another mayor who represents the same narrow interests.

We need a change, someone who will fight for working-class families. That change is not the grandson of the president of the New York Federal Reserve and the son of a Manhattan hedge-fund operator.

That change is me, the son of a Marine, someone from and of Jersey City, who understands what it means to struggle, to work hard, and to fight for a fair shot.

This election is about our heart, our soul, and our future. It’s about keeping families in their homes, making this city affordable, and lifting every neighborhood, not just a privileged few.

This election is about you, the working families of Jersey City. James Solomon’s efforts to beat me up or attack me are all about distracting from a record of non-accomplishment.

I’m focused on solutions, not insults, on your pocketbook, your rent, your taxes, your quality of life.

Please vote for Team McGreevey, and join us tonight at our Runoff Rally:
7:00 p.m.
Zeppelin Hall, 88 Liberty View Drive, Jersey City.

Let’s come together, raise our voices, and build a Jersey City that works for all of us.

  1. McGreevey betrayed the public trust as governor. I congratulate him on his personal redemption and subsequent good works, but he has not earned another opportunity at political office.

He has not held or run for any office in over 20 years. That’s a long time to be out of the game.

Jersey City needs to ditch the past and embrace the future.

  2. Spare me. You’re a convicted felon who spent his few years in city government as Fulop’s lap dog. Meanwhile you offer a long list of things you say Solomon “didn’t do” without mentioning that he fought for almost all of them only to be outvoted by the same people on the council and in city hall that support *you.* And then you lie about his experience.

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. You fooled us once when you were governor, misusing funds for your boyfriend while you were in the closet. Then when caught yin the misappropriation you outed yourself without even speaking to your family first, trying to spin it as somehow “explaining” your fraud.

We won’t be fooled again. James Solomon has fought not only for those in his Ward, but those in other Wards that have asked for his help. And he doesn’t owe anything to those who actually *have* blocked affordable housing, all of whom are helping to finance your campaign.

    Solomon 2025
