In an editorial, Hudson County Prosecutor Wayne Mello commends law enforcement for their efforts at MetLife Stadium during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as well as during the 4th of July.
The summer of 2026 has been a wonderful time that our region will not soon forget. It has been a period filled with celebrations of this great country’s 250th Anniversary and numerous events and activities related to the FIFA World Cup.
These events were able to be enjoyed by our families and friends due to the incredible efforts of law enforcement.
As the Hudson County prosecutor, I wish to recognize and thank our law enforcement community for their efforts in ensuring the public’s safety during this significantly challenging period.
Our law enforcement officers did so without fanfare while still meeting their critical day-to-day duties.
Over the past two months Hudson County and the surrounding area welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors into our communities for the FIFA World Cup, which included eight match games in the neighboring Meadowlands and numerous FIFA-sponsored events in our municipalities.
In addition to these sporting events, law enforcement was further put to the test in preparing for activities along the Hudson River related to the celebration of the United States of America’s 250th Anniversary.
There was an International Naval Review of more than forty nations, OpSail, an airshow, and numerous municipal Fourth of July fireworks shows, which drew thousands upon thousands of attendees.
Behind the curtain of these great shows, municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement partners planned for more than a year and worked to ensure everyone remained safe, from our local neighborhoods to our major transit hubs and beyond.
The results borne from the law enforcement community’s dedication are representative of the very best of policing and are a testament to the importance of strong interagency cooperation.
A summer filled with activities of this scope demonstrated that our region is home to some of the finest law enforcement officers in the nation.
While so many of us prepared for barbecues with family, or to sit down and watch the big game with our friends, police officers put their own celebrations on hold to put the safety of our communities first.
Continuing on a summer of service, tomorrow evening Hudson County law enforcement will join police departments across the country participating in National Night Out, an annual event centered on building strong relationships between law enforcement and the communities that they serve.
Hudson County has excelled in securing the common trust amongst communities and law enforcement, allowing us to solve issues together before they grow into crises.
As our law enforcement officers prepare to answer another call for service, I say thank you. Thank you to our municipal police department chiefs and directors for their leadership and dedication to the safety of our communities.
Thank you to our municipal, county, state, and federal law enforcement partners, the Office of Emergency Management, and our community leaders for their cooperation and support.
Most especially, thank you to the men and women who wear the badge for the work that you do each and every day, for it is noble.
Finally, and on a deeply personal note, I want to thank the detectives, assistant prosecutors, and civilian staff of the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office for your dedicated service throughout this summers’ events and for being ever-present and ever-willing to rise to any challenge you are called to meet.
