The fundraiser, started by members of his family in cooperation with the Union City Police Department and the state PBA, will help fund memorials and support for his family.

“He was a great man, father, and police officer. No one can compare. He was taken way too soon from our family and the Police department. He is missed dearly by many. Our memories of him will follow us forever, we know he is looking over us now and continuing his watch from heaven,” the fundraiser description said.

The page, which was just opened within the hour, has already raised over $1,000 towards their $10,000 goal as of 3:45 p.m.

Ruperto, 52, had been hospitalized as his coronavirus symptoms got progressively worse, and was ultimately place on a ventilator.

He began with the UCPD in 1999 and was most recently assigned as a detective in the training division.

She also said that he was a 1986 graduate of Emerson High School and that he leaves behind two children: Alex, Jr. and Juliana. His daughter works for the UCPD as a Public Safety Telecommunicator.

He is the first Hudson County police officer to succumb to the virus and the second member of local law enforcement: County Corrections Officer Bernard Waddell, Sr. passed earlier this month.
