“O’Dell had been a fixture in the North Bergen Recreation Department since 1972, first as a volunteer coach and later as a township employee since 1985,” said township spokesman Phil Swibinski in an e-mail.

Swibinski stated that O’Dell served as a confidential aide to Parks and Recreation Commissioner Hugo Cabrera and was heavily involved in the day to day management of the department, as well as serving on the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority board and being involved with the NB Democratic Municipal Committee.

“On behalf of the Board of Commissioners and the Township of North Bergen, Mayor Nick Sacco offers his sincere condolences to Digger O’Dell’s family and his many friends during this difficult time,” Swibinski added.
