The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) hosted a free citizenship workshop for residents of Jersey City at Frank Conwell Elementary School (Public School No. 3) yesterday.

The NALEO Educational Fund is a nonpartisan 501 (c)(3) organization that aims to make sure the Latino community stays civically engaged.
According to Roberto Frugone, the Northeast Director for the NALEO Educational Fund, there are currently 400,000 legal permanent residents in New Jersey who are eligible to become citizens.
Frugone stated that one of the benefits of becoming a citizen is that, “statistically, people that become citizens also earn a greater income for their family.â€
About 75 Jersey City residents attended the citizenship clinic and received individualized attention from volunteer attorneys.
“There’s definitely a lot of benefits, but really becoming a part of the fabric of this country is the main benefit,†said Frugone.
