“Coach C was a beloved member of the Jersey City community whose extraordinary gift for working with young people touched every corner of our city. During his years of mentorship at University Academy Charter High School and through the Department of Recreation, he guided students onto positive paths, instilled confidence, and created opportunities that changed lives,” McKnight said in a statement.

“He saw hope and promise in every child and dedicated himself to helping them realize it. Honoring his memory through the designation of ‘Coach C Day’ will help ensure his legacy endures and inspire members of our community to continue his work in uplifting the next generation of our great city.”

Collins was a beloved father, community champion, and mentor in Jersey City, where he worked at University Academy Charter High School and within the Department of Recreation.

In his role as a high school mentor and youth counselor, Coach C had an immeasurable impact on the youth of Jersey City, helping at-risk children develop into confident and dedicated members of the community.

As the founder of the Woodlawn Avenue Block Association, he is remembered for his vibrant block parties and food drives, always offering a helping hand to his neighborhood.

The bill, SJR-143, would ensure his legacy continues by formally recognizing his contributions each year and encouraging communities across the state to honor his commitment to service, mentorship, and unity.
